Achill Island is an ideal location for the walking enthusiast. At Achill Isle Walks we can cater for all levels of walkers, from gentle walks along the coast to the more demanding day out on Croaghan, Achill’s highest mountain. We look at the flora and fauna and archaeology that is available on each walk. We can provide a handcrafted itinerary of your choice for a number of multi-day walks or just the one walk during your stay on Achill. Allow yourself to unwind in Achill’s unspoilt landscape.

We can also arrange first class accommodation at Achill Isle House if required.

Sample Tours on Achill

Deserted Village Walk

A gentle 2 hour guided walk through 6000 years of history. We will look at the flora, fauna and field walls of the village and its long lost peoples.

Slievemore Walk.

A 4-5 hour guided walk through the Deserted Village and evidence of Neolithic man (4000 BC) and on to the summit of Slievemore taking in breathtaking views of the entire island of Achill.

Coffin Trail Walk.

A 4-5 hour walk along the slopes of Minaun to Dooega Head following in the footsteps of ancient legends.

We also offer walks on the 12 Bens of Connemara, The Nephins, Sheeffry’s, Maamturks, Aran Island, Clare Island and Ireland’s Holy Mountain Croagh Patrick and many more.

Your Guide

GERARD MANGAN

A native of Achill Island, Gerard is also a qualified Fáilte Ireland Approved Marine and Countryside Guide with speciality in Local History and Hillwalking. Gerard holds a Diploma in Archaeology from the National University of Ireland, Galway. He has over 30 years experience of walking in the West of Ireland and particularly on Achill Island. In addition, he has walked in Scotland, Austria, Slovenia, Russia, Tanzania, South Africa, South America, and in many parts of Ireland.

Gerard served a term as Chair of the then Mountaineering Council of Ireland’s Hillwalking Committee. He is keenly aware of protecting our environment and Achill Isle Walks supports sustainable tourism and the “Leave No Trace” principles, vital for the maintenance of the beauty and ecology of the island.
